It is possible that originally 呐 meant stammer, a meaning similar to present day 讷. That is, the words remain inside the mouth. Chen Menghun “Gudai hanyu zidian” gives two pronunciations for 呐, nà with the meaning "shout" and nè with the meaning "stammer",
